Communitea
PACKAGING DESIGN
A wellness tea collection for a social cause
PROJECT SUMMARY
The challenge for this project was to establish a product brand with a set of packaging design which addresses a social or environmental issue in British Columbia. For this project, I've decided to address the LGBTQ+ mental health youth crisis. According to Statistics Canada, lesbian, gay and bisexual individuals are more likely to experience depression, anxiety, suicidality and substance abuse than their heterosexual counterparts. Specifically in British Columbia, UBC conducted a study in which half of transgender students in BC (ages 14-18) reported being bullied at school, 65% were taunted or ridiculed and 44% were physically threatened or injured in the past year.
For youth in British Columbia, it is important that not only they receive free and/or low-cost counselling, but they feel as if they can communicate with an adult who is sensitive and thoughtful towards their identity and sexuality. The Communitea Collection is a herbal wellness tea collection which donates a portion of their funds to ensure the organizations which provide these services can continue to do so.
PRODUCT Story
In 2014, a flower bloomed in Davie Village. Violet Teahaus is the first-ever LGBTQ+ tea shop business located in Vancouver. The business' goal is to foster a comfortable and laidback sober community space for the local LGBTQ+ community. A space in which people can come enjoy some tea during the day while spilling it too.
With the Communitea Collection, Violet Teahaus' goal is to cultivate a future filled with other LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs by donating a portion of its funds towards free/low-cost counselling programs. For this collection,  Violet Teahaus has selected their fan-favourite blends for relaxation, energy, and gut health.
Support youth-in-crisis, and drink to your health, because the real tea is that a community is better when all members are taking care of their minds, bodies, and each other.
